Salt Lake City’s new Public Safety Building is the nation’s first Net Zero Energy (NZE) public safety building. It uses no more energy than it creates. The $80 million building is home to the fire and police departments, and functions as a nerve center for addressing all citywide emergencies. It is designed to withstand a major seismic event and remain functioning separately from the electrical grid. The building design complemented the surrounding area with a welcoming outdoor space to accommodate large public events which spill over several blocks.
Utelite Corporation worked with the architect to design a lightweight planting soil to support the vegetated green roof as well as the exterior structural plantings.
