Huntsman Cancer Institute is an NCI-designated cancer research facility and hospital located on the University of Utah campus. Phase 1 was completed in 1999, the Institute has two main sections: laboratory and office. The laboratory portion is designed using one-way concrete pan joists to control vibration for laboratory instruments. The office portion is designed using steel moment frame, concrete on metal deck with composite wide flange beams. The Institute sits adjacent to the Huntsman Cancer Hospital and is connected by glass walkways. The world-class facility opened in 2004 and has 50 patient beds, four operating rooms, and ten treatment rooms.
The 2011 expansion added four operating rooms, 25 exam rooms, 50 patient rooms, a critical care unit, additional PET/CT imagery machine, and a breast MRI unit to the hospital. Now, Phase IV of this world-renowned cancer center adds 225,000 SF to the existing HCI campus with opulently design spaces that offer the comfort and warmness of a four-star resort. In addition to 85,000 SF of lab space and 81,000 SF of population research space, this $125 million phase added 165 offices, two inspiring, two-story tall interior atriums, two sky bridges that connect lab spaces, and a beautiful outside plaza that was designed to promote collaboration between researchers in casual settings.
