Natural History Museum of Utah

Natural History Museum of Utah

The Museum recently completed a successful $103 million public/private funding partnership to construct the Rio Tinto Center, the Museum’s new “green” home that will house the state’s extraordinary collections and offer more gallery spaces to further its mission of public engagement in the sciences. Many sustainable design features were successfully incorporated in the project including pervious concrete to manage stormwater, light concrete and white roofing material to reduce heat island effect, outdoor lighting that limits light pollution to surrounding areas, vegetated green roof with water efficient native plants, and a rainwater collection system to irrigate the landscape.

Utelite Corporation provided the lightweight planting media that supports the planted green roof areas.
